Until recently most scientists thought they knew what killed off the dinosaurs. A 10km-wide meteorite had smashed into the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, causing worldwide forest fires, tsunamis several kilometres high, and an 'impact winter' - in which dust blocked out the sun for months or years. It was thought that the dinosaurs were blasted, roasted and frozen to death, in that order. But now a small but vociferous group of scientists believes there is increasing evidence that this 'impact' theory could be wrong. That suggestion has generated one of the bitterest scientific rows of recent times. The impact theory The impact theory was beautifully simple and appealing. Much of its evidence was drawn from a thin layer of rock known as the 'KT boundary'. This layer is 65 million years old (which is around the time when the dinosaurs disappeared) and is found around the world exposed in cliffs and mines. For supporters of the impact theory, the KT boundary layers contained two crucial clues. In 1979 scientists discovered that there were high concentrations of a rare element called iridium, which they thought could only have come from an asteroid. Right underneath the iridium was a layer of 'spherules', tiny balls of rock which seemed to have been condensed from rock which had been vapourised by a massive impact. Prof Kevin Furlong (Penn State University & UC Erskine Fellow) gave a fascinating description and explanation of the extraordinary Earthquake to hit Christchurch New Zealand (in the Canterbury region) on Sept 4. This is one seminar you don't want to miss, you don't want your family to miss, nor expats or friends overseas. Kevin is a superb speaker, providing deep insight and explanation in an informative but non-technical manner, as he "walked the fault line" literally hours after the massive quake struck. Kevin's abstract: "Earthquakes such as the September 4 Canterbury event reflect New Zealand's position astride the Pacific-Australia plate boundary. Although we tend to focus on the major, highly visible fault lines, such as the Alpine Fault, it is important to remember that many secondary structures can host large and damaging earthquakes. This event provides evidence of the ongoing plate motions but also the manner in which plate boundary deformation is distributed. This presentation will focus on both details of the actual event and where it fits into the bigger picture of plate tectonics in New Zealand."

Я не оппозиционер, не революционер и, вообще, человек далёкий от политики. Даже не либерал. Я просто хочу гордиться Родиной. Несмотря на то, что живу за границей. А, может быть, и особенно поэтому. Ведь хочется всем здесь вокруг с гордостью сказать: «Вот, смотрите, откуда я!». А если есть дети, хочется, чтобы они любили Россию, и, когда вырастут, хотели бы поехать учиться в Москву. А что на самом деле? Как новости не откроешь - очередной ужастик. И при этом обязательно с участием полицейского, чиновника или другого, часто весьма высокопоставленного и ответственного представителя власти. Как ни глянешь в любые рейтинги - Россия по всем прекрасным показателям, типа коррупции, преступности, свободы и т.п. среди позорных африканских стран. С кем из нормальных успешных друзей ни поговоришь, все хотят уезжать, или хотят, чтобы хотя бы их дети уезжали. И понимаешь, что никогда своих детей ни в какую Москву учиться ты не пошлёшь. И как же это объясняют те, чья задача сделать так, чтобы Родиной можно было гордиться? Через десять лет уже неприлично сваливать всё на либерастов и девяностые. За десять лет даже не смогли гаишников отучить брать взятки. Бред! В девяностые хоть денег не было. А за последние десять лет при рекордных ценах на нефть страна от денег пухнет. И где результат? Результат виден только в том, что 60% элитных квартир от 2 млн в Москве покупают чиновники. В любой нормальной стране с работающей правовой системой это было бы невозможно. А у нас правовая система ...
