thefilmarchive.org February 17, 2012 The National Humanities Medal is an American award that annually recognizes several individuals, groups, or institutions for work that has "deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities, broadened our citizens' engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand Americans' access to important resources in the humanities." The annual Charles Frankel Prize in the Humanities was established in 1988 and succeeded by the National Humanities Medal in 1997. The token is a bronze medal designed by a 1995 Frankel Prize winner, David Macaulay. Medals are conferred once annually, usually by the US President, to as many as twelve living candidates and existing organizations nominated early in the calendar year. The President selects the winners in consultation with the National Endowment for the Humanities. NEH asks that nominators consult the list of previous winners and consider the National Medal of Arts to recognize contributions in "the creative or performing arts". The National Medal of Arts is an award and title created by the United States Congress in 1984, for the purpose of honoring artists and patrons of the arts. It is the highest honor conferred to an individual artist on behalf of the people. Honorees are selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and ceremoniously presented the award by the President of the United States. This course explores the beliefs and cultures of Islam and the Muslim world. It covers the life and teachings of Muhammad, major themes of the Qur'an, and the primary differences between Sunni and Shi'i Muslims. It also introduces aspects of Muslim cultures in the Middle East and South Asia in order to demonstrate the plurality of traditions within the religion of Islam. It concludes with a review of American foreign policy in the Muslim world over the past half century and its impact on Muslim-American relations. Dr. Scott Lucas, who received his Ph.D. In Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago, is an Associate Professor in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies and in the Religious Studies Program at the University of Arizona. His research examines the role of Muhammad's teachings, recorded in the hadith literature, in Islamic law. He teaches courses on Islamic Law, Islamic Mysticism, Qur'anic Studies, and Middle East History. Currently, he is translating from Arabic significant selections of al-Tabari's famous 10th century Qur'an commentary.
