euronews science - In Vitro meat

www.euronews.net Dutch scientist Mark Post hopes that he will be able to produce the world's first test-tube burger later this year. He says it will look, and taste identical to a regular quarter-pounder. In the laboratory, he has already grown small strips of beef from bovine stem cells, and is now looking at ways to increase production. It is white because there are no blood cells. But researchers hope that once cooked, these cells will look and taste the same as conventionally produced meat.

euronews cinema - Nazis from the moon at a cinema near you

www.euronews.com Finnish filmmaker Timo Vuorensola's latest movie is a science fiction comedy called 'Iron Sky.' It is 1945 and a group of Nazi scientists escape the Fall of Third Reich in space rockets and land on the Dark Side of the Moon. Undetected they construct a military base and invasion armada, but the announcement of the arrival of a US Space Shuttle spreads panic with hilarious consequences. The director says the film borrows from cinematic history: "I would say that if Mel Brooks wanted to do a film combining "Independence Day" and "Doctor Strangelove" our film would be more or less the end result." Iron Sky is on rolling world wide release. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

euronews science - Extinction of species accelerating

www.euronews.net Scientists are calling it The Sixth Mass Extinction; species are dying off faster than at any time since the dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago. It is estimated that around 30000 species become extinct each year. In January, 100 EU researchers and policy experts met at Copenhagen University to discuss this biodiversity crisis. It is thought that previous mass extinctions were due to natural causes: asteroids, volcanic erruptions and climate evolution. The current mass extinction is primarily caused by humans.

euronews innovation - Shocking Olives

www.euronews.com There is a electrifying new way to squeeze more from an ancient resource - olives. "We have improved the olive oil extraction process by using a technology based on a pulsed electric field," explained Arturo Portugal, a research engineer at CRIC. In Malagón in central Spain, a small company is testing out a shocking new form of oil extraction. The idea is to shock the olives with an electrical pulse before squeezing them. The brief pulses of a strong electrical field enlarge the pores in the cellular membranes, simplifying the extraction of oil. Arturo Portugal told us: "The electric pulses, generated by this machine, are directed to this electric box where they pass through the olive paste, pumped through the pipes." The result is more oil from the same amount of raw material. What is more, punching open the pores of the fruit with an electric pulse makes it simpler to get the best oil from unripe olives. The owner of Aceites Malagón, Aniceto Gómez said: "To ensure the best quality of oil, it's important to extract it without heating. This project facilitates that process, making it possible to extract oil from the best green olives at ambient temperature." The pilot plant is treating six litres of olive paste per second. Once proven, the technology, developed within an EU project, will be scaled up to full production levels. Arturo Portugal said: "The emerging markets outside Europe nowadays produce goods at much lower price. This project means we can ...

euronews science - Battery birds' nests

www.euronews.com The town of Ranong in Thailand is undergoing a construction boom, but the new homes are for birds, not people. And not just any old birds; they are for the tiny swifts whose nests are used in bird's nest soup. The idea is to construct buildings that mimic the swiftlets' natural living conditions; the dark, damp caves of South East Asia's tropical regions. The boom of birds' nest factories in Asia is a blessing for the species, which up until now had suffered from over-eager nest hunters. Other wild animals like rhinos, sharks and tigers are still being hunted. It is hard to believe that a nest made of bird saliva could be edible, let alone considered a delicacy, but some call them "white gold" and birds' nests are worth around 2000 euros per kilo. The Chinese believe that birds' nest soup improves digestion, increases libido, strengthens the voice, helps asthma, maintains youth and boosts the immune system. Whether or not that is true, it is certainly full of proteins and amino acids. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

euronews futuris - New life for old metal mines

www.euronews.com The European Union imports huge amounts of metal. Yet buried deep in Europe's bowels is a treasure trove of copper, zinc and other precious metals. Researchers have been digging deep to uncover ways to put European mining back on the map and they're not short of ideas. Europe's deepest metal mine is seemingly unfathomable, at 1430 meters. For forty years, Pyhäsalmi mine has been a rich source of copper, zinc and pyrites. However the countdown to its closure has already begun as Pihlaja, a Mining Engineer, at Pyhäsalmi mine explains: "We currently produce around 1,4 million tons of ore per year but if the metal prices stay at the current level, we won't be able to maintain the mine beyond the end of 2018". Metal mining throughout Europe is facing similar problems but scientists are becoming a regular fixture at the Pyhäsalmi Mine in an attempt to breath new life into an old industry. Juha Kaija, a Finnish Geologist talks about his research: "Metal resources exist in Europe but extracting them is socially and economically challenging. Our research aims to develop more efficient exploration methods and also at imagining new ways to re-use mining waste materials to give European metal mining a fresh new impetus". Finding new ores in active or abandoned metal mines is the researchers´first aim and that is no mean feat, especially for old, deep deposits. Timo Mäki, Chief Geologist, at Pyhäsalmi mine describes the difficulties: "Here in Finland and also in ...
