In this 1959 recording, the late English conductor Robert Irving (1913-1991) leads the New York City Ballet Orchestra in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Suites 1 and 2. Icreated this video from the LP that is shown above, issued on the Kapp label in 1960, serial number 9048. Maestro Irving was music director for the NYC Ballet from 1959 through 1989. I'd like to thank Earl Carlyss, former concertmaster of the NYC Ballet Orchestra and violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet (1966-1986), for making his personal copy of this extremely rare and extraordinary LP available to me to produce this video. To preserve the depth of sound that was available to recording engineers at the time this LP was pressed some 50 years ago, I did not use any software to adjust the audio quality to remove small noises and distortion. So that no questions arise in the listeners' mind as to the provenance of this and similarly rare and historical recordings, I rely for images on the LP label (3:43, 30:57) and jacket, front (15:20) and reverse. Miniature Overture March - 3:02 Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - 5:34 Trepak (Russian Dance) - 7:04 Coffee (Arabian Dance) - 8:07 Tea (Chinese Dance) - 11:19 Dance of the Mirlitons (Reeds) - 12:15 Waltz of the Flowers - 14:21 Scene and Dance Of The Grandfather (Act I, No. 5) - 20:28 Pas De Deux (Act 2, No. 14) - 26:05 Scenes (Act II, No. 10 and No. 11) and Chocolate (Spaish Dance) - 30:52 Waltz Finale and Apotheosis - 40:00 More from Tchaikovsky
