Thursday, April 26th, the United States House, in a rushed vote, passed the HR 3523, also known as CISPA. Dubbed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, it allows the United States to collect information about users of the internet. It allows the United States to monitor all activity on the net and can be used to monitor any individual's internet usage. This monitoring is called deep packet inspection, it looks through everything that is going in and out of your computer, which is a blatant violation of our rights to privacy. Looking through your mail is a crime for a postman, these rules should apply to the internet too. The bill's intent is to help stop cyber attacks... However; the vague wording of the bill could allow the government to use this new power to go behind privacy protection and monitor, censor, and cut off online communication. Outcry from Internet users, over the controversial cyber security act 'CISPA', is set to spill onto the streets. The hacker group Anonymous is hitting back in response to the bill by launching what it calls 'Operation Defense Phase two'. CISPA, having passed the US House of Representatives on Friday, is now a step closer to becoming law. It's now heading to the Senate, as the White House continues to threaten a veto of the bill. The act could allow Internet companies to legally share sensitive user information with the American government - a move critics say infringes on privacy and civil liberties. Journalist David Seaman explains how this bill puts everyone at risk. ANONYMOUS: House Passes CISPA, The Fight Is Just Beginning - Message to US Citizens Despite growing resistance to the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, CISPA has cleared its first legislative hurdle. But the battle over the widely-criticized information-sharing bill is just heating up. In an earlier-than-expected vote Thursday evening, the House of Representatives voted 248 to 168 in favor of the bill , which was originally designed to allow more sharing of cybersecurity threat information with government agencies. The legislation has drawn the ire of legislators, civil liberties groups, security practitioners and professors, and hundreds of thousands of petitioners, who say the bill tramples over users' privacy rights as it allows Web firms like Google and Facebook to give private users' information to government agencies irrespective of other laws that protect users' privacy. "It's basically a privacy nightmare," says Trevor Timm, a lawyer and activist with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "CISPA would allow companies to hand over private data to the government without a warrant, without anonymity, with no judicial review."
